Caring for silver
Silver darkens because it reacts with the air, not because it is wearing out. A little care keeps a piece bright for decades.
Every day
Put jewellery on last, after perfume, hairspray and hand cream. Take it off before swimming, showering, washing up and sleeping. Wearing silver regularly keeps it brighter than storing it does.
Cleaning
Use the cloth included with your order, rubbing in straight lines. For heavier tarnish on plain silver, a silver polishing cloth is enough. Avoid liquid dips and ultrasonic cleaners on anything set with stones or pearls.
Natural stones
- Turquoise, coral, pearl and opal are porous: wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth only, and keep them away from chemicals and heat.
- Garnet, amethyst, zircon and crystal can be washed in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, then dried thoroughly.
- Beaded pieces on silk should not be soaked; the thread stretches.
Storing
Keep pieces separately in the pouch or box they came in, with the anti-tarnish strip. Humid bathrooms are the worst place for silver.
When it needs more
If a piece needs more than a cloth can give it, write to us and we will tell you what we can do. The journal entry on silver care goes into more detail.
